Troubleshooting Checklist – CANsmart Not Powering On

  • Issue: CANsmart is not powering on
    • No accessories working
    • No LED indicator light with ignition

Basic Checks

  • Confirm the fuse is installed
  • Inspect the fuse:
    • Check if the interior metal bridge is intact (not blown)

Battery Connection

  • Verify battery cables are correctly connected:
    • Orange wire (with fuse holder) = Positive (+)
    • Brown wire = Negative (–)
  • Have the user physically confirm connections
    • Do not rely on verbal confirmation alone

CANbus Connection

  • Double-check CANbus connection to the bike
  • For DNL.WHS.11602 CANsmart (R1200 / R1250 GS/GSA):
    • There are two connectors
    • Installers often plug into the wrong one

  • Ensure connection is:
    • Toward the rear of the bike
    • Typically halfway under the lip of the OEM top rack

LED Indicator Check

  • Check LED indicator on CANsmart controller:
    • Should be solid green when ignition is ON
  • ⚠️
    Important:
    • The computer must NOT be plugged in during this test
    • A connected laptop (via USB) can power the LED to solid green
    • This can give a false positive unless the unit is faulty or deactivated
